Stop Press!

1 Sep 2010: work has started on version 7 of GRM/OPD which will include a web based version of the program, as well as other new functionality!

4 Jun 2010: how long does it take your pensions valuation software to run? OPD version 6.50 takes 30 seconds (including producing detailed output to Excel) to value a UK pension plan with more than 20,000 members.  OPD650 includes further significant improvements in speed, customisation and a new "Store valuation run automatically in batch file" in OPD650 - see here for screenshots and short video clips.

Our GRM/OPD software has support for yield curve valuations and automated production of results by member in drill down cashflows, screenshots can be seen here and here respectively.

Biographical Information

After an education spent partly in the UK, and partly in Kenya and in France, I left King Edward VI Grammar School Aston (Birmingham) to read mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge in October 1982. Four years later, after a II.1 degree and a Diploma in Mathematical Statistics, I joined the actuarial partnership R Watson & Sons (now Watson Wyatt Partners) where I qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1989. I remained at Watson Wyatt until the end of 1995, when I decided to leave my job as equity partner in charge of the European Asset Allocation team in Roger Urwin's investment practice, in order to take up the challenge of setting up my own company, InQA Limited. In the summer of 1998 I married Jane and moved to the lovely English seaside town of Bournemouth.
Since September 2008, I have been President of the Wessex Actuarial Society (formerly Bournemouth Actuarial Society).

Personal Interests

My main hobbies include playing the piano (I particularly enjoy accompanying my wife Jane who is a violinist), tennis, skiing/ snowboarding, reading and travel.  Having obtained my Grade 8 in 2008, I also play the double bass with the Bournemouth Rehearsal Orchestra.  Their site also has some short video and sound clips of the Orchestra in action.  Here is an album with several photos.  I am also  Chairman of the Westbourne Orchestral Society, where I play double bass.
I also accompany the New Forest Youth Choir which Jane and I founded in April 2008.
Other musical activities in 2007 and 2008 have included performances (as pianist within the Parry Quintet) of the piano quintets of Shostakovich and Elgar, also as one of the 3 soloists in Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no 5. Jane and I also perform as instrumental duo Close with a very talented vocal quartet, Harmony.
In April 2009 I very much enjoyed playing double bass in the band for RMDS' performance of Oliver!
May 2009: Latest activities include performing the Elgar and Shostakovich piano quintets again as part of the Parry Quintet and playing for the New Forest Youth and Children's Choirs in their performances in the CADArts Festival (click on each thumbnail for a bigger picture):
The Parry Quintet Patrick with New Forest Children's Choir
I have also started my own blog at 21st century actuary.

March 2010: most recent musical activities include performing the Brahms Piano Quintet with the Parry Quintet at Hurn Court, and accompanying the New Forest Children's Choir in the foyer of the  Queen Elizabeth Festival Hall  in London.
